Emerson, global industry experts in automation technology, industrial software and advanced measurement solutions, has introduced a new flameproof model of its Rosemount 965 Flame Detector, expanding the product’s capabilities for hazardous-location applications requiring reliable hydrocarbon flame detection. The new model combines hazardous-location certification with Emerson’s QuadSense technology, factory-calibrated-for-life operation, multiple integration options and rugged enclosure protection. It is designed to help industrial operators select a flame detection solution matched to the risks, operating environment and infrastructure requirements of each application.

QuadSense technology uses four infrared sensors to help distinguish hydrocarbon fires from non-flame background radiation. This supports dependable flame detection while helping protect against nuisance alarms in applications where personnel safety, asset protection and operational continuity are critical. Under specified conditions, the Rosemount 965 can detect hydrocarbon fires at distances of up to 150 feet, or 45 meters, with a typical response time of less than five seconds. Five selectable sensitivity levels allow users to align detection performance with the requirements of individual installations.

The Rosemount 965 is factory calibrated for life, helping reduce recurring field calibration routines and their associated maintenance requirements. Infrared built-in test capabilities continuously verify the integrity of the detector’s optics and electronics, supporting confidence in its performance between scheduled manual inspections.

Multiple output options, including HART connectivity, support integration with standard industrial communication and control infrastructures. Universal wiring also helps simplify specification, ordering and sitewide deployment. IP66 and IP68 enclosure protection support operation in demanding industrial environments where equipment may be exposed to dust, moisture and other challenging conditions.

“Customers need flame detection technology that aligns with the risk, environment and operational needs of each application,” said Evgeny Rivkin, flame and gas product manager with Emerson’s measurement instrumentation business. “This new flameproof model expands the Rosemount 965 offering for hazardous locations, helping teams balance detection performance, resistance to nuisance alarms and routine calibration requirements.”

The new flameproof model is suited for hazardous environments commonly found in oil and gas facilities, chemical and petrochemical plants, storage tank farms, hazardous materials storage areas and explosives or munitions sites. The broader Rosemount 965 platform also supports non-hazardous and light-industrial applications, including transportation infrastructure, public buildings, cable tunnels, semiconductor facilities, warehouses and other sites where dependable hydrocarbon flame detection is required.
